What are the rules?

The fighters will use 8 ounce gloves in a 12 round boxing fight. Both McGregor and Mayweather will be tested by USADA for performance-enhancing drugs before and after the fight.

What Does Conor McGregor have an advantage with 8oz gloves versus Mayweather?

I think it is an advantage for Conor but not because of punching power issues. I think it is because of the fact that he is not used to boxing matches. So the smaller the gloves, the better for him. With big 10 oz gloves it is much harder to get through the guard than with MMA gloves. So a reduction in size is helpful.

It is a myth to think that Mayweather cannot hit hard. He does have punching power but perhaps not as much as other world champions. Because he is so good at defending and evading, this is the kind of fight he has preferred and it is the reason why he has not knocked out an opponent for a long time. Why would you want to go for a risky knock out when you can toy with your opponent for 12 rounds, get a decision without a mark on your face and collect money and fame?

The smaller gloves in my view increase the chances of the match not going the distance. I think Conor is going to do a lot better than many people think. I have predicted a 40% chance for him to win and I have also said that only fools think that Conor cannot win by decision. He is perfectly capable and fit enough to go 12 rounds with Mayweather and win on points. Don’t forget that he is used to gruelling 5 minutes rounds.

In his past fights, Conor has always had his punching power underestimated by his opponents and it will happen again against Mayweather. He will line up for the fight with a big weight advantage, possibly being around 170. That will be big compared to Mayweather.

My concern is Conor’s tendency to empty his tank and hit the wall. That’s how he lost the first fight against Diaz. However, it was clear in the rematch that he had learnt from his mistake and he went the distance without too much trouble.

Conor is a much better fighter overall than Mayweather but this is a boxing only match and they do not come much craftier than Floyd. You can expect a lot of holding and smothering from him. He will try to negate the agility and superb movement from Conor. I do not believe Mayweather when he says that he will not take a step back and go for the knock out. He will weave and duck and defend and run in the first few rounds and pick his counter-attacking chances carefully.

This match will be decided by the brain of the fighters rather than by their hands. The one who has worked out his opponent and set up the right plan will be the winner.

There will be surprises in the match and stuff that nobody really predicted. How about a draw followed by a rematch?
